Softball Completes First Week of Fall Practice; Releases Lone Star College Classic Schedule
Sept. 18, 2006 HOUSTON - The University of Houston softball team completed its first week of fall practice Monday afternoon at the Cougar Softball Stadium. Head coach Kyla Holas has been impressed with how her team has handled a hectic opening week of practice. "It's really been tough for us because we don't have as much time in practice as we normally have to get ready for our first tournament," Holas said. "We're rushing things a bit, but our returnees are helping our newcomers get acclimated. We'll be ready to go this weekend." Houston opens the fall season at the Lone Star College Classic this weekend. The Cougars face Navarro, St. Mary's and Stephen F. Austin Saturday before taking on McNeese State and Sam Houston State Sunday. "We have a good mix of Division I and junior college teams on the schedule," Holas said. "It's a nice way to gauge ourselves before going into some stiff competition at the Spring Klein College Classic." The Cougars are coming off a program-best 40-23 season and a third-place finish at the Conference USA Tournament. Pitching has been the strength of the opening week of practice. Houston returns Angel Shamblin, an NFCA All-South Region Second-Team selection and 2006 Conference USA Pitcher of the Year in addition to Carla Kennimer, Candi Kloecker and Barbie Love in the circle. "We're much better now as far as pitching is concerned from where we were at this time last season," Holas said. "We've also improved a lot defensively. Our offense and aggressive baserunning will be our focus this fall and are things that need to come around." Below is Houston's schedule this weekend at the Lone Stat College Classic.
