Softball Starts Fall Practice
Sept. 27, 2013
HOUSTON - The University of Houston softball team returned to the diamond yesterday as the Cougars began their fall schedule. The Cougars will use these next six weeks of practice to get set for their fall schedule that includes eight games and six within the friendly confines of Cougar Softball Stadium. Houston opens the fall campaign with games against HBU and San Jacinto on Friday, Oct. 11 before facing San Jacinto and Galveston on Saturday.
"It was awesome to get the team out there together for that first time and begin the process," said head coach Kyla Holas. "The first day of practice helps set the tone for the rest of the season and I was happy with what I saw out there today. We don't need to be perfect on the first day, we just need to bring the right attitude and commitment and that's what the team brought out to the ballpark today."
Thursday's practice marked the first time the program has been able to practice as a team as the Cougars have been working individually with the Houston coaching staff since school has begun. Base running drills began the practice followed by live hitting and work inside the batting cages.
The 2013-14 Cougars return 12 letterwinners from last year's squad that went 41-20 in the regular season and welcomes five newcomers to the program. Last year was the third straight season UH advanced to the NCAA postseason, a first in program history. Houston returns seven starters from the 2013 squad including reigning Conference USA Player of the Year Haley Outon.
