Oct. 7, 2013

HOUSTON – Ten members of the Houston softball program were named 2012-13 National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-American Scholar Athletes, the association announced on Monday.

Houston’s student-athletes were: Holly Anderson, Jaime Edwards, Reina Gaber, Sydney Gerbracht, Ashleigh Jones, Diedre Outon, Haley Outon, Katie St. Pierre, Tess Soefje and Bailey Watts.

The award is given to players submitted by a member coach who achieved a 3.50 grade point average or higher during the 2012-13 academic year.

"I always say credit for these types of awards goes to our academic staff and our student-athletes," said head coach Kyla Holas. "We expect to be among the best on the field, in the classroom and around the community and seeing awards like this validates what we're trying to accomplish here."

In September, Houston was recognized as one of the 2013 NFCA Top Ten All-Academic Teams. Houston ranked eighth in the nation with a 3.530 cumulative team GPA which was an all-time record for the Cougars, breaking the previous mark of 3.50 set in 2011.

In July, the Cougars were also awarded the Conference USA Sport Academic Award for the second straight year. The honor is given to the program with the top GPA in its respective sport among the conference.
