Houston to Build Indoor Softball Facility

Nov. 2, 2017

HOUSTON -- With the generosity and support of an anonymous donor along with the Diamond Club, the University of Houston Softball program and Head Coach Kristin Vesely are proud to announce an indoor practice facility is coming to Cougar Softball Stadium in Spring 2018.

All funds for the project were privately raised through the Diamond Club, the restricted giving arm of Cougar Pride in support of Houston Softball.

"The indoor facility is a vital piece for our student-athletes' development," Vesely said. "The completion of this project as well as our video board will push our program to new heights, and we are happy to be able to reward our student-athletes with these amenities.

"The two facility improvements are the highlight of the fall and continue to build excitement for the upcoming season."

The two capital projects represent $1.2 million in contributions raised through the Diamond Club, all in the last calendar year, marking a record-breaking year in donations received and funds raised.

"With the generous support of an anonymous donor and our Diamond Club members, our softball program and its student-athletes are able to operate on a high level both on and off the field," Vice President for Athletics Hunter Yurachek said. "We are very appreciative of their support which provide opportunities for our student-athletes to become Champions for Life in athletics, academics and as members of our community."

Indoor Facility Breakdown

Dimensions  70' x 80'
Square Feet  5,600
Batting Cages  5 full-length cages
Individual Cage Dimensions  60' x 15'

The indoor facility, which will replace the current batting cage down the right-field line, will measure 70-feet by 80-feet. The 5,600-square-foot space will feature five batting cages, measuring 60-feet long by 15-feet wide each, with retractable nets for the space to be used in a variety of ways. The facility will have a synthetic turf floor and will be temperature controlled.

"It's no secret it rains here in Houston," Vesely said. "This building will give us the competitive advantage regardless of outside elements. Our new facility will help us run more efficient practices, give us a place to practice with inclement weather and be a place for our student-athletes to use whenever they want."
