    Nov. 16, 2012

HOUSTON - The University of Houston softball program signed three recruits during the 2012 Fall signing period. Head coach Kyla Holas will welcome Lauren Gunter, Jordan Rains and Hayley Chamberlain to the UH program for the 2013-14 academic year.

"This is a small class but a key one for us," said Holas. "This group of girls will bring a great balance of offense and defense for us. They all come from some very good summer programs and should be ready to contribute to our program very soon. I can't wait until they get on campus.

Rains, who plays third base, led her high school Cy Fair in RBIs and home runs as a junior while batting .411. Handling the hot corner for Cy Fair, Rains was named the District Defensive MVP. The high school senior plays her club ball for Eclipse.

"Jordan was the first commitment we got in this class. She is Houston through and through. She has been a starter at 3b from the moment she got with Eclipse and I am so exited to have her passion for Houston on the field next year."

She was also named the Designated Player of the Year for her team as a freshmen in 2010.

Chamberlain hails from Camarillo, Calif. and played high school for Camarillo and club ball for the Diamond Girls is an incoming shortstop for the Cougars.

"Hayley is the shortstop I have been waiting years for. She is a total package player and brings a great arm, defensive range and speed to us. I look forward to her career at Houston and the things she will do for us on the infield."

The left-handed-slapper is one of the top players from the state of California and was named to Pacific View League First Team this past season after batting .396 and scoring 28 runs from her leadoff position. She helped her squad claim a share of the league title last season and as a sophomore her team was named the CIF Southern Section champions.

Gunter and the second Texas signee calls Crowley, Texas her home and played select ball for the Mizuno Impulse. Last season, Gunter captured District 7-4A Catcher of the Year honors.

"Lauren is such a solid athletic player. She really gets the game and is a type of player you notice in her presence on the field. She brings a great skillset to us."

Gunter batted .484 with eight home runs her junior year to be named to the Texas 4A All-State squad.
