Julia Lonnegren Sweeps 1M and 3M Diving Events at North Texas
Jan. 16, 2013
HOUSTON- Senior diver Julia Lonnegren swept the 1M and 3M competition as the University of Houston swimming and diving team dropped a double dual meet Wednesday afternoon at the Norval Pohl Recreation Center in Denton, Texas. The victories on the boards brought Lonnegren her first victories of the year as she scored 290.47 in the 1M and 310.87 on the 3M. Sophomore Natasha Burgess took third in both the 1M (276.22) and 3M (253.12) while freshman Danielle Shedd finished as runner up in the 1M (278.47) to give Houston the 1-2-3 sweep of the event. Shedd also turned in a fifth-place finish in the 3M (242.32). Houston fell 199-95 to SMU and 155-145 to North Texas. The meet marked the Cougars first competition since returning from a grueling training experience in Hawai'i over the winter break. "We swam against two really good teams and unfortunately came up short today," said head coach Augie Busch. "After almost two weeks of intensive training, and all the fun in the sun (in Hawai'i), their bodies looked tired in the water. That's something you expect with how much effort they put in during the training trip. We just need to get back home, get some rest and get back on our feet before our next races." Senior Reka Kovacs was the Cougars top swimmer in the pool with three top-four individual finishes (100 and 200 breast, 200 IM) and helped the 200 medley relay squad swim to a fourth-place finish.
