Kovacs Wins 200-Yard Breaststroke at LSU Quad Meet
Jan. 25, 2013 HOUSTON- Seniors Reka Kovacs and Julia Lonnegren each posted a victory in their events to lead the University of Houston swimming and diving program on the opening day of competition at the LSU Quad Meet Friday evening. The quad meet pits all four teams against one another in a dual-meet fashion over the two-day meet. Through the halfway point, Houston leads Tulane 106-98 and trail Rice (108.5-87.5) and the No. 24 host Tigers (130-75). Kovacs earned her second first-place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke this evening as she clocked in at 2:20.22. Holli Pisarski took fifth in the event (2:25.64). Lonnegren and sophomore Natasha Burgess gave the Cougars a 1-2 finish in the 1M for the second-straight week, and third time overall this year the duo have taken the top two spots. Lonnegren was consistent on all six dives with all scores above 48.0. She tied for the highest score (54.6) of all the 1M divers with her forward two-and-a-half somersault pike in her second attempt to take the lead for good. In the 3M, Lonnegren took second (323.30) with Burgess finishing in third (321.60) as LSU's All-American Alexandra Bettridge nudged the Cougars by 2.40 and 4.10 points. Junior Heather Winn swam a season-best time in the 1,000 free (10:21.05) to finish as runner up in the event. Laykin Lowry (10:30.19), Lizzie Justice (10:31.55*) and Emma Nelson (10:51.75) placed fifth, eighth and ninth to give Houston a strong showing in the distance event.
