HOUSTON– The University of Houston swimming and diving program dropped a dual meet to No. 9 Texas A&M 173-110 in College Station, Texas on Saturday afternoon.

The meet served as the last tune up before hosting the Conference USA Championships on Feb. 20-23. Although the Cougars have been training hard since the end of the semester, the focus shifts to rest with the championships looming ahead.

“That’s one of the best teams in one of the best conferences, and we raced them really hard,” said head coach Augie Busch. “Overall it went really well – things are pointed in a very positive direction for us. Most of our girls have continued to improve their times over the last couple of weeks although we’ve been maxing out in the weight room.

“We’re still pretty tired with all the training and conditioning but we’re still trying to figure out how to get faster week-by-week. The next two-and-a-half weeks are all about rest.”

Senior Reka Kovacs won her second 400IM of the year (4:34.18) and juniors Laykin Lowry (4:38.57) and Lizzie Justice (4:42.60) helped complete the sweep of the top-three spots in the race.

Julia Lonnegren picked up a pair of runner-up finishes in the 1M and 3M diving events, scoring 280.05 and 289.28. Freshman Danielle Shedd finished in the top-four of each dives and Natasha Burgess took third in the 1M.

Houston finished the season 2-6 in dual meets.
