Swimming and Diving in Fifth Place after First Day of C-USA Championship

Complete First-Day Results (Feb. 27, 2008) in PDF Format HOUSTON - The University of Houston swimming and diving team stood in fifth place Wednesday after the first day of the 2008 Conference USA Championship at UH's Campus Recreation & Wellness Center Natatorium. In an abbreviated session featuring only two relay events and the men's 1-meter diving, the Cougar team of juniors Sasha Schwendenwein and Andrea Pa'lmai and freshmen Paige Bissett and Andrea Kells finished fourth in the 800-yard freestyle relay after posting a time of 7:37.63 Rice held the overall lead among C-USA schools after the first day with 74 points, while East Carolina was second with 66 points. Marshall (60) and defending champion SMU (40) rounded out the rest of the field. On the men's side, defending champion SMU was first after the first day with 108 points, while East Carolina and Hawai'i were tied with 104 points apiece. Cal State Bakersfield stood in fourth place with 44 points. The meet kicks into high gear at 10 a.m., Thursday with the preliminaries of the 500-yard freestyle, 200-yard individual medley and the 50-yard freestyle. The women's 1-meter diving preliminaries are slated to begin around 1 p.m. with the finals of all the day's events starting at 6 p.m. All-session tickets are available for only $25 for adults and $10 for youth. Single-day tickets are available for $10 for adults and $5 for students with ID. Youth includes children from 3 years old to high school. Children who are 2 years old and younger are admitted free. All students from Conference USA schools are admitted free with a valid student ID. Gates will open, and tickets will be sold beginning one hour prior to the meet. In addition, a wide variety of Championship merchandise will be available near the Tickets table. Fans should note that cash only will be accepted at the Tickets table. This marks the fifth consecutive season that the Cougars have hosted the league's postseason event. UH is the only school in the league to host the meet at an on-campus site.
