HOUSTON - White outswam Red 119-103 during the University of Houston's intra-squad meet Saturday morning. Senior Heather Winn, took wins in the 75, 150, 400 free and swam the opening leg of the 200 free relay to help lead the White team to victory.
"It was great to see the racing side of the personalities on the team,” head swimming coach Rich Murphy said. “A big thank you to our fans for their outstanding support, and the officials and recreation center staff for helping us hold a successful meet.”
"Today was a very fun start to the season with enthusiasm, great racing effort and outstanding squad spirit punctuated by the red team using red lipstick as a creative form of eyeblack or in this case 'eyered' to set the tone for the meet."
Heading into the final event, the 200 free relay, White a narrow held 103-97 advantage over the Red squad. The veteran team of Winn, senior Krystan Morrell and sophomores Maya Owens and Dora Bednjanec claimed the win (1:38.86) and clinched the victory for the day.
Sophomore Maggie McCord (50 free), senior Laykin Lowry (300 IM) and freshman Cameron Balkom (150 breast) added wins for Red as the spirited team also opened up the day with a win in the 200 medley relay.
The Cougars take to the water next on Oct. 25-26 at the Rice Invitational.
