HOUSTON - The University of Houston swimming and diving program marked the beginning of the 2012-13 season with the annual Red/White Meet Wednesday afternoon and the White team came away with a 120-106 victory.

The intrasquad meet came down to the final event as Reka Kovacs, Maggie McCord, Kimmy Ballo and Krystan Morrell finished first in the 200 free relay.

"I was really pleased with how engaged the girls were with the meet," said head swimming coach Augie Bush. "They were out there competing and racing against each other until the very end and that's the culture we're trying to establish."

With six new freshman swimmers, it was a chance for Busch a third of his swimmers compete for the first time.

"I know through our recruiting efforts we have more speed now and that's going to help our relays out. After getting everyone out there in the water, we're all ready for the season to be here already and looking forward to heading to Miami in a couple of weeks."

Despite the efforts of the newcomers, it was the seniors who held serve. Kovacs took first in the 300 IM and 150 breast while Ballo took first in the 150 back. The two seniors teamed up with Morrell and Laykin Lowry to add a win in the 200 medley relay to begin the racing.

Senior Moira Fraser also took two victories in the 100 IM and 150 free and finished second to freshman Maggie McCord in the 50 free. McCord touched the wall in 24.05.

Reigning Conference USA Diver of the year Julia Lonnegren and freshman Danielle Shedd were evenly matched against sophomores Natasha Burgess and Torri Olanski, splitting the 1M and 3M events.

The Houston divers came away with a wash in the 1M and 3M events in a glimpse of something to expect as Lonnegren and Burgess battled for the top-two spots all season in 2011-12.

The Cougars head to Miami (Fla.) to begin the regular season with a trimeet against Miami and Florida International on Oct. 12-13.
