HOUSTON - The University of Houston swimming and diving team wrapped up competition Saturday at the Phill Hansel Duals at the Campus Recreation Natatorium. The second day of the meet was not scores; however, the Cougars notched wins over Rice and Florida International on Friday night.

Despite not scoring the second day of the duals, it was a good chance for UH to gain more experience in the pool as they will travel east for duals on Oct. 30-31 against Duke, Georgia Tech, UNC Wilmington and Emory.

"Today's competition was not scored but it gave our girls the opportunity to swim in events that they don't usually swim in, try new things and practice a lot of relay starts and takeovers," head coach Mark Taylor said. "We tried to give people opportunity to swim in their weaker events and it turned out really well."

We won quite a few of the relays today and its sets us up for tough competition at the end of the month."

Houston opened the second day of the meet with a win in the 800-yard freestyle relay. Freshman Reka Kovacs, sophomore Beccy Hillis, freshman Christine Salinas and sophomore Kim Eeson combined to finish with a time of 7:50.20.

The Cougars continued to take top honors at the meet, coming out in first with a 2:11.10 in 250-yard freestyle relay. This meet featured swims of 25-yards by a senior, 50-yards by a junior, 75-yards by a sophomore and 100-yards by a senior. The winning team consisted of senior Jessica Shamburger, junior Andrea Kells, sophomore Kim Eeson and Salinas.

UH notched their third win of the competition by turning in a time of 4:07.74 in the 4x100-yard medley relay. Members of the winning relay included Kovacs, Hillis, Kells and sophomore Natalie Newcomb. The "B" team of sophomore Rachel Holcomb, freshman Holly Pisarski, freshman Catherine Finley and freshman Haley Weathers finished sixth with a time of 4:47.68.

Another Cougar win came via the 500-yard freestyle relay. Eeson, freshman Kimmy Ballo, Salinas and sophomore Olga Bordatcheva combined to finish in a time of 4:49.12. The Cougar "B" team of Finley, Weathers, Pisarski and sophomore Rachel Holcomb finished fifth with a time of 5:10.49. The event featured a 50-yard leg, a 100-yard leg, a 150-yard leg and a 200-yard leg.

The Cougars win streak on the afternoon was snapped when the Rice Owls took top honors in the 4x50-yard butterfly relay. The Houston team of Eeson, Shamburger, Kells and Bordatcheva, however, turned in a second place time of 1:50.65.

The Cougars went on to finish second in the 4x50-yard backstroke relay. The team of Shamburger, Ballo, Kovacs and Hillis turned in a time of 1:51.44.

The Cougars won their fifth event of the noon with Kovacs took top honors with a time of 4:33.36 in the 400-yard IM. Newcomb was third with a time of 4:42.41.

"We were thrilled with Reka and Natalie's performance in the individual IM," Taylor said.
