MINNEAPOLIS – The Houston Swimming & Diving team earned two top-eight finishes at the Minnesota Diving Invitational.
“I’m very proud of how well all of the girls competed against the Big 10’s best”, said Diving Coach Bob Gunter. “It was a great experience to get a feel for the high level of competition we are going to see at the zone meet in March. Now we are looking forward to coming home for the Phill Hansel meet next week”.
The Cougars faced stiff competition in the 10-team invitational that included Ohio State, Michigan, Wisconsin, Iowa, Nebraska, Iowa State, and Minnesota. Micaela Bouter led the charge four Houston with a strong start in the 1-Meter. The senior finished third overall in the prelims, racking up 287.20 total points. Bouter put up high marks down the stretch, finishing in the top-four in each of the last four rounds for a sixth-place in the finals of the 1-Meter with a total of 255.05 points. Lauren Burrell finished eighth in the prelims, followed by a 23rd-place finish from Katelyn Abernathy.
On day two of the invitational, Houston once again came out strong and put up high marks in the 3-Meter. Bouter had a successful day, putting up a first-place finish in both the second and fourth rounds for a total of 284 points. The senior would move into the finals of the event where she’s post a third-overall finish with 315.20 points.
Burrell found success on day two of the Minnesota Diving Invitational with an eighth-place finish in the prelims. The sophomore posted 267.85 points to earn a berth to the finals. Burrell turned in a fourth-place finish on her fourth dive and ended the day with 287.95 points in the final, finishing in seventh-place. Abernathy closed out Friday with a 20th-place finish in the prelims.
Houston will return home for the annual Phill Hansel Invitational Nov. 16-18 at the CRWC Natatorium.
