HOUSTON--The University of Houston swimming and diving team led Incarnate Word,146-40, Vanderbilt, 143.50-39.50 and Florida International, 130-53 after day one at the Phill Hansel Duals Weekend, which took place at the Campus Recreation & Wellness Center Natatorium.

The Cougars started the meet early with a second-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay. The A team of junior Jessica Shamburger, freshman Beccy Hillis, senior Doreen Polotzek and sophomore Paige Bissett finished the event with a time of 1:48.95.

Senior Andrea Pa'lmai won the 1,650-yard freestyle with a time 17:07.61. Freshmen Natalie Newcomb (18:04.89) and Rachel Holcomb (19:08.82) finished in ninth and 12th-place, respectively.

Senior Sasha Schwendenwein got her first win of the day in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:50.24, the fourth best in Conference USA this season. Freshman Kim Eeson took third with a time of 1:52.51, while freshman Olga Bordatcheva finished eighth with a time of 1:57.33.

Shamburger clocked a time of 57.95 to win the 100-yard backstroke. Bissett finished sixth (1:00.87), and sophomore Andrea Kells finished 10th (1:02.85). Sophomore Markee Johnson finished the event with a time of 1:05.86.

Hillis finished in second-place in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:21.10. Bordatcheva finished 10th (2:29.65), while Newcomb (2:32.99) finished 12th.

Schwendenwein marked a time of 57.29 to finish in second in the 100-yard butterfly. Polotzek tied for sixth with Vanderbilt's Leigh-Ann Axt with a time of 59.54, while Kells (1:00.08) finished eighth in the event.

Eeson took second for the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.49, while sophomore Brittany Copeland finished in fifth with a time of 25.13. Markee Johnson finished in 15th with a time of 26.73.

Pa'lmai finished third in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:07.67, less than a second behind second-place finisher Shelby Bottoms from Rice (2:07.74). Bissett (2:13.94) and Hillis (2:14.42) finished seventh and eighth, respectively.

The Cougars wrapped up the first day of the Phill Hansel Duals Weekend with the A team of Schwendenwein, Eeson, Shamburger and Pa'lmai finishing first in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:29.94. The B team of Bordatcheva, Newcomb, Polotzek and Copeland took sixth with a time of 3:42.51.

For diving, the Cougars took the first three spots. Junior Anastasia Pozdniakova won the 3-meter diving event with a total of 389.70 points, while her teammate sophomore Lacey Truelove took second with 301.90 points. Freshman Rachel Erickson took third with a total of 219.75 points.
