Divers Return to Action in Georgia

HOUSTON - The University of Houston diving team starts the New Year for Cougar athletics when they compete at the Georgia Diving Invitational this weekend.
The three-day event, to be held at Gabrielsen Natatorium, begins with the 3-meter competition on Friday and continues with the 1-meter event Saturday. On Sunday, the meet wraps up with platform diving. Each day's competition begins with the preliminaries at 11 a.m. and concludes with the finals at 6 p.m.
Senior Yulia Pakhalina continues to lead the Cougars during the 2002-03 season. The Penza, Russia, has won 11 of the 12 diving events in which she has entered this season and reeled off wins in 48 of 50 events during her collegiate career.
A three-time NCAA national champion, Pakhalina has recorded the team's highest scores on the 1-meter and 3-meter springboards this season.
Redshirt freshman Azul Almazan has been equally impressive during her first collegiate season. In her most recent competition, Almazan finished third in the event during the Texas Invitational on Dec. 6, racking up 399.70 points to set a new UH 9-dive record.
The Mexico City, Mexico, native was honored as the C-USA Diver of the Week for Nov. 19 after sweeping the 1-meter and 3-meter events against Louisiana-Monroe.
Veronica Smith, one of only four seniors on this year's Cougar team, is also scheduled to participate.
The entire UH swimming and diving program returns to action on Jan. 10-11 as it competes in New Mexico. The road swing starts on Jan. 10 with a 2 p.m. (CST) dual meet against New Mexico in Albuquerque and wraps up with a 10 a.m. (CST) dual meet against New Mexico State in Las Cruces, N.M.
