AUSTIN -- The University of Houston Swimming and Diving team turned in a solid performance in the opening two sessions of the TYR Pro Swim Series in Austin, Texas. Three Cougars highlighted the day by finishing in the top-15 in the finals that took place earlier this evening at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swim Center.
The event that features over 350 of the best swimmers both nationally and abroad was kicked off this morning at 9 a.m. Gaby Jimenez Peon got things started for Houston with a 32nd -place finish in the prelims of the 400 IM, turning in a time of 5:03.80.
In the fifth event of the day, the Cougars would make a statement by way of junior Eleanna Koutsouveli. Koutsouveli touched the wall in a time of 2:17.03, finishing 16th and booking a spot in the finals of the event. Koutsouveli would close out the day with a 13th-place finish in the Consolation Final, turning in a time of 2:16.52. Laura Laderoute also made an appearance in the prelims of the event and finished in the top-40. Laderoute closed out the race in 2:20.24 for a 33rd-place finish.
Three Houston swimmers competed in the seventh event of the afternoon, the 200 Breaststroke. Angeliki Mavrantza paced the Cougars with a 17th-place finish in the preliminary round. Mavrantza closed out the race with a time of 2:34.05 and would appear in the finals of the event, going on to place 14th in the Consolation Final with a time of 2:33.64. Peyton Kondis would finish in the top-30 of prelims after touching the wall in 2:36.68 for a 25th-place finish. Jimenez Peon posted a preliminary time of 2:40.84 and finished in 37th-place.
The final event of the opening session would be the 200 Freestyle, and would feature both Zarena Brown and Ksenia Yuskova. Brown would finish 13th with a time of 2:02.39 and head on to the finals of the event. Brown turned in the highest Cougar finish of the evening after placing 12th in the Consolation final with a time of 2:03.11 Yuskova finished in the top-50 of the prelims for the event that featured over 90 competitors, finishing in 41st-place with a time of 2:04.90.
Houston will return to action tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. for the second day of competition at the TYR Pro Swim Series -- Austin. Prelims will begin at 9 a.m. and will be followed by finals, slated for 5:40 p.m.
