Jan. 17, 2008

HOUSTON - The University of Houston swimming and diving team returns to action this weekend with a road trip through north Texas.

The trip begins at 4 p.m., Friday against North Texas at the Pohl Recreation Center and at 1 p.m., Saturday against No. 12 SMU at Perkins Natatorium. Fans should note that those starting times are earlier than previously posted schedules.

The Cougars (8-3) come into the meet after sweeping Puget Sound, St. Cloud State and Stony Brook during a relay meet in Honolulu at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatics Center on Jan. 9.

This weekend's meets will be the first dual-meet action for the Cougars since sweeping Florida International and Indian River Community College on Nov. 3.

This season, junior Sasha Schwendenwein has emerged as one of the Cougars' steadiest performers, posting season-best times in the 50-, 100-, 200- and 500-yard freestyle events as well as the 100-yard backstroke.

Fellow junior Andrea Pa'lmai tops all Cougar swimmers in the 1,000- and 1,650-yard freestyle events as well as the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke and the 200- and 400-yard individual medley.

On the diving side, senior captain Ginni van Katwijk leads the way on the 1-meter springboard and platform, while freshman Courtney Forcucci is tops on the 3-meter springboard.

The Cougars look to extend their 13-meet winning streak against Mean Green on Friday. UH has never lost to UNT in dual-meet action.
