HOUSTON - After helping lead the University of Houston swimming and diving program to a record-setting win last weekend, it was only fitting that Cougar diver Azul Almazan earned some extra hardware Tuesday.
For the fourth time during the 2003-04 season, Almazan was honored as the Conference USA Diver of the Week. It also was the fifth time during her brief career that the Mexico City, Mexico, native collected the league's weekly award.
She captured top honors on the 3-meter springboard at C-USA rival TCU and at North Texas last weekend. With the Cougars win at UNT on Saturday, the team recorded their ninth dual-meet win of the year and set a new UH single-season record in that category.
Almazan was a big reason for the Cougars' success. She won the 3-meter event at TCU with a score of 303.23 points, becoming the only competitor in the field to top the 300-point plateau. She also finished second on the 1-meter board with 260.33 points against the Horned Frogs.
One day later, she posted another steady performance against North Texas, collecting first place on the 3-meter board with 271.95 points and a second-place finish on the 1-meter board.
Almazan and her Cougar teammates will take a break before returning to action at noon, Jan. 31, against Arkansas in Fayetteville, Ark.
