HOUSTON - University of Houston junior swimmer Kim Eeson and senior diver Lacey Truelove were named the Conference USA Swimmer and Diver of the Week.
The pair combined for six event wins on Jan. 21-22 against No. 19 Arkansas and Arkansas-Little Rock, respectively. Together, the duo totaled 54 points in individual events to help Houston swim a close meet against the nationally-ranked Razorbacks and win its first-ever meeting with UALR.
Eeson displayed her talent in multiple events during the Cougars' road trip to Arkansas, claiming four individual event victories and helping her 200-yard medley relay team to another. Truelove continued her dominant performances on the diving board last weekend surpassing the NCAA `A' qualifying marks in both of her dives.
Against No. 19 Arkansas, Eeson shined as she accounted for two of Houston's six event wins. She claimed her first win just three events into the weekend when she recorded a time of 1:50.47 in the 200-yard freestyle. She struck again in the 100-yard freestyle, nabbing the win with the ninth-fastest event time in program history (50.98).
The following morning, Eeson kicked off the dual meet vs. UALR with a strong first-leg swim in the 200-yard medley relay (1:50.87) to spark the first of seven-straight UH wins to start the meet. Tapping in just one-tenth of a second shy of her career-best mark in the 50-yard freestyle, Eeson won the event with a time of 23.95. She finished her successful weekend with her first 100-yard butterfly victory of the season, recording a time of 58.24.
Truelove ran the table last weekend during the Cougars' road trip to Arkansas, winning both events she entered against the nationally ranked SEC power. The senior All-American found a way to edge out the Razorbacks in close 1-meter and 3-meter events. After breaking her career best in the 1-meter against North Texas the previous week, Truelove posted another brilliant effort against Arkansas.
Her NCAA `A' mark of 293.70 edged Razorback freshman Kesha Naylor by less than two-tenths of a point. She had a little more room in the 3-meter, posting a 324.68 for the win. Both marks surpassed the NCAA 'A' qualifying standards.
This is Eeson's first Swimmer of the Week honor this season and second of her career, while Truelove picks up her third Diver of the Week accolade this season and fourth of her career.
The pair will be back in action Jan. 28-29, when they travel to Baton Rouge, La., to face No. 23 LSU, along with C-USA foes, Rice and Tulane. Action is set to begin at the LSU Natatorium Friday at 5 p.m.
