Two Program Records Fall on Opening Day in Dallas

Feb. 14, 2018

DALLAS – The University of Houston Swimming & Diving program came out with a bang on the opening day of action at the 2018 American Athletic Conference Swimming & Diving Championships. Houston concluded the day with two program records, one pool record, two first-place finishes and 105 points for first overall.

“Two conference championships, two school records and one one-hundredth of a second away from a perfect night,” said Head Swimming & Diving Coach Ryan Wochomurka. “It’s about as good of a start as we could ask for. The challenge for us now is to come out swinging in the morning. There’s a lot of meet left, but this was an exciting start. I’m really excited about the dominate performance from those ladies on the 800 freestyle relay.”

The Cougars got out to emphatic start, finishing the 800 Medley Relay in a program-record time of 7:07.86 and setting a pool record in the process. Mykenzie Leehy, Ksenia Yuskova, Samantha Medlin and Zarena Brown shaved over six second off of the previous program record of 7:13.08 for the first top finish of the meet on the women’s side.

In the second event of the evening, Lauren Burrell posted 287.45 in the 3-Meter springboard for her first conference championship. This marks the fourth consecutive year that Houston has taken first-place in the 3-meter. Micaela Bouter advanced to finals in the event, finishing eighth overall.

The session began much like it started, Houston turned in its second program-record setting time of the day in the 200 Medley Relay. Separated by only one-one hundredth of a second from host SMU, the Cougars finished second in the race after touching the wall at 1:38.57. Laura Laderoute, Peyton Kondis, Katie Higgins, and Cait Horner bested the previous school record by almost an entire second.

Houston will return to action tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. for the second day of competition in Dallas. Prelims are set to begin at 10 a.m. and will be followed by finals at 6 p.m.
