March 6, 2018

HOUSTON – Two student-athletes from the University of Houston earned top American Athletic Conference academic recognition Tuesday as The American announced its 2017-18 Female Scholar-Athletes of the Year by sport.

Micaela Bouter, from Houston’s Swimming & Diving program, and Megan Thothong, from Houston’s Women’s Golf program, both earned honors Tuesday and will both receive a $2,000 scholarship which may be applied to graduate or professional studies.

Houston was one of four American member institutions to have two student-athletes earn a sport’s Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year honor.

Micaela Bouter | Swimming & Diving
A senior, Bouter earned a second American Athletic Conference Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year award after posting impressive numbers in her senior campaign on the Houston Swimming & Diving team, both inside and outside the pool.

The 11-time American Athletic Conference Diver of the Week has a 3.73 cumulative GPA and is in her final year of studies towards a degree in Biology with a minor in Medicine and Society.

Bouter is a three-time American All-Academic team honoree, a three-time CSCAA Honorable Mention Scholar All-American, an Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar First-Team honoree and four-time NCAA Zone Diving Qualifier.

Bouter is currently competing in the 2018 NCAA Zone D Diving Championships.

Megan Thothong | Women’s Golf
In four years at the University of Houston, Thothong has been the epitome of a student-athlete.

On the course, she became the first student-athlete in program history to compete in three NCAA Regionals during her career and is the first student-athlete to win multiple tournament titles.

Thothong was a member of the All-American Athletic Conference First Team in 2016 and is a two-time Player of the Week selection. She also is the only student-athlete in program history to enjoy two holes-in-one during her career.

In the classroom, Thothong has posted a 3.96 cumulative grade-point average in marketing and was a three-time Women’s Golf Coaches Association All-American Scholar and a three-time member of The American All-Academic Team.

She also is a member of Beta Gamma Sigma, the C.T. Bauer College of Business Honor Society and received the 2016-17 American Athletic Conference Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Award.
