    The American All-Academic Team Named

Swimming & Diving Honored For Classroom Excellence

    Sept. 26, 2013

HOUSTON - The University of Houston swimming and diving team begins its 2013-14 season this weekend with the annual Red and White Meet beginning at 9 a.m. inside the Campus Recreation & Wellness Center.

For first year Houston swimming head Rich Murphy, Saturday's intra-squad meet will be the first time he sees his team compete.

"This will be a great opportunity to bring into sharper focus the pictures that I see at practice," said Murphy. "The team has a courageous group of seniors that are leading this squad and we are embracing the possibilities that a new year bring with it."

The Cougars return 16 letterwinners from last year's team and welcome eight talented newcomers to bolster the squad. Houston enters the season coming off a successful 2012-13 campaign as the Cougars finished as runner up at the Conference USA Swimming and Diving Championships, tying their highest ever finish at the meet.

Last year's MVP, senior Heather Winn, returns and will lead a young and eager squad. The divers return junior Natasha Burgess and sophomore Danielle Shedd, the 2013 C-USA Freshman Diver of the Year under the direction of diving coach Jane Figueiredo, who is entering her 24th season coaching at Houston.

"This meet will be the first stop on this season's journey towards our first conference championship meet in the newly formed American Athletic Conference. This fun, first step gives us an opportunity to have a friendly competition against one another in a meet setting to shake off some rust as has been a couple of months since our women have competed."

Houston will compete in the American Athletic Conference this season, the fifth different conference in program history (C-USA, 1997-2013; National Independent, 1997-2001; Southwest, 1983-1996; Texas AIAW, 1977-81).

"We look forward to seeing our fans and friends come out and support this team."

Admission and parking for this weekend's meet is free to all fans.
