BOSTON - The University of Houston swimming and diving team will open their 2011-12 season with a set of dual meets in Boston this weekend. On Friday, the Cougars compete at Boston University with a 4 p.m. EST start time and Houston travels across town on Saturday to face Boston College at 12 p.m. EST.
For first-year head coach Augie Busch, his first meet comes on the road.
"This is my first meet as a head coach," said Busch. "I got some adrenaline running through me already, I'm excited and I can tell our girls are too. It's cool to open up the season and a career with a road trip to a city like Boston. I'm sure this will be a very memorable weekend for all of us."
Helping usher in the new era of Houston swimming stands a coach on the opposite end of the experience spectrum in Jane Figueiredo - the longest tenured head coach at UH. Assistant coach Jaime Lewis also returns to assist with the coaching efforts of the swim team.
The Cougars started their preparation for the 2011-12 season over two months ago and got their first taste of competition at the Red and White meet last week when the team participated in an intrasquad meet.
"Our team is really excited. They've been training for a couple of months now and are tired of competing against each other. They are ready to race," said Busch.
Friday's meet will mark the start of the regular season for Boston University. The Terriers were picked to finish second in the American East Conference this year.
Boston College started their season last Friday and finished third to Vermont and Army in a four team multi-meet. The Eagles compete at Bryant University on Friday before hosting Houston the next day.
