Oct. 16, 2003
HOUSTON - Fresh off a dominating season-opening win last weekend, the University of Houston swimming & diving program continues its schedule at 5 p.m., Friday, when it meets Texas and Northern Arizona in a tri-meet.
The Cougars (1-0) will meet the Longhorns at the Jamail Texas Swimming Center in Austin, Texas. However, Northern Arizona will remain in Flagstaff, Ariz., and swim in its home facility with the timing results being sent to Texas on-line.
The Cougars opened their season Saturday with a 151-91 win over North Texas in the opening of the new Campus Recreation & Wellness Center. At that meet, UH won 10 of 13 events to post a 1-0 record for the second consecutive season.
Against the Mean Green, freshmen Szintia Szanto and Haley Menard led the way with a pair of first-place finishes each. Swimmers Kristin Bay, Haley Menard and Lucile Turpin also collected first-place finishes in the win.
On the diving side, freshman Azul Almazan swept both 1-meter and 3-meter springboard events to lead the Cougars to the easy win.
For those impressive performances, Almazan was honored as the Conference USA Diver of the Week on Tuesday. It was the second time in her career that Almazan received that award and the 13th time that a Cougar diver was recognized.
