HOUSTON - Sophomore diver Natasha Burgess has been named the Conference USA Diver of the Week as announced by the league office on Tuesday.
Burgess takes home the first weekly honor from Conference USA to open up the 2012-13 campaign and it is the third time she has earned weekly distinction from the league office.
The Adelaide, Australia native captured wins in the 1M (296.70) and 3M (291.37) last Friday over Florida International, and against her own highly-competitive Cougar dive squad.
Houston edged the Panthers 152-148 as the meet came down to the final two events with the Houston divers taking 16 of a possible 20 total points in the 3M event to close the gap before Houston's 400 free relay team combined for the team victory. Burgess wins in the two events netted the sophomore 22 points for an individual high on the team.
With the marks of 296.70 in the 1M and 291.37 in the 3M, Burgess has qualified for the NCAA Zone competition hosted by UH on March 11-13, 2013.
Rice sophomore Erin Flanigan was the C-USA Swimmer of the Week as she posted three of the top times in the conference so far this season after sweeping both distance races and turning in a solid 200-butterfly in the Owls' season-opening dual meet against Kansas at the Rice Aquatics Center Competition Pool.
This is the third time Burgess has been named C-USA Diver of the Week (Jan. 10 2012; Feb. 7, 2012; Oct. 16, 2012).
Houston has the week off before travelling across town to Rice for the Holiday Inn Hotel & Suites Med Center Invitational at the Rice Aquatics Center Oct. 26-27.
