HOUSTON - The University of Houston swimming and diving team hosts a pair dual meets this weekend as it hosts North Texas on Friday at 3 p.m. and SMU on Saturday at noon inside the Campus Recreation & Wellness Center.
The weekend will serve up the Cougars first dual meet challenges of the year. Houston finished second at the Rice Invite last weekend and fourth at the North Texas Relays to begin the season.
“We have these two teams (North Texas and SMU) coming to our home pool this weekend that are eager to show us what they can do and we’re eager to defend our home turf,” said head swimming coach Rich Murphy. “We need to raise our game up to whatever challenge they might bring and we’re ready to do just that.”
This weekend will give head diving coach Jane Figueiredo the chance to compete against a familiar foe when the Mustangs come to town.
“SMU has been my rival since I’ve been in college. I always enjoy going up against my good friend Jim Stillson (SMU diving coach),” said Figueiredo.
Figueiredo competed for UH (1983-86) against SMU in the Southwest Conference days and then took over as the Cougars diving coach at the end of the SWC. As the Cougars transitioned from the SWC to Conference USA, SMU and Houston continued to square off for conference bragging rights. Both teams joined The American Athletic Conference this summer and will rival one another in their third different conference under the Figueriedo and Stillson tenures.
Houston hosts the Phill Hansel Invite on Nov. 21-23.
