Nov. 20, 2012
HOUSTON - Houston seniors Reka Kovacs and Julia Lonnegren have been named Conference USA Swimmer and Diver of the Week, respectively, after posting NCAA qualifying marks last week at the Phill Hansel Invitational. Kovacs met the NCAA B standard in the 200 breaststroke, while Lonnegren recorded NCAA-qualifying marks on the one- and three-meter boards and the platform.
Kovacs was Houston's high-point swimmer at the Phill Handel Invitational. She swam a personal best and NCAA B time in the 200 breaststroke (2:15.73) to finish in eighth place and clocked a season-best 4:20.69 to claim seventh place in the 400IM. Kovacs also swam a season-best time of 1:03.56 in 100 breast. This is the second Swimmer of the Week honor for Kovacs' career and first of the season, as well as the first time a Houston swimmer has captured the award.
Lonnegren paced Houston, as she scored 46 points during the Phill Hansel Invitational. She notched NCAA-qualifying standards in each dive, including her first attempt at the platform this year. Lonnegren had the high-point total (60.80) of the second round on the platform with her Armstand Back 2 Somersault 1 1/2 Twist Free and posted a season-best score in the 3M (323.85). She finished third among all divers in all events combined with multiple NCAA All-Americans competing at the competitive diving contest.
The award is the eighth of Lonnegren's career and first of the season which gives her the second-most weekly diving awards in conference history. With eight Diver of the Week Awards, Lonnegren stands in sole place with the second-most awards in conference history, breaking her tie with fellow Cougars Azul Almazan and Anna Kiess. Anastasia Podznidkova, another Houston alumnus, leads with 19.
