Houston Swimmers Split Season-Opening Double-Dual Meet

BATON ROUGE, La. (Oct. 29) -- The University of Houston swimming and diving team split its season-opening double-dual meet in Baton Rouge on Friday, October 29. The Cougars defeated the University of Louisiana-Monroe 71-36 and fell to meet host LSU 65-47.

Though it was only the team's first meet of the year, five different Cougars posted lifetime best times in five different events. Houston's veteran diving contingent of seniors Yolanda Hernandez-Casas and Christy Christensen both made the NCAA Zone Qualifying standards for one and three-meter respectively.

Two Houston true freshmen, Falon Hopkins and Jessica Blake looked strong in establishing personal bests in the 100-yard butterfly (57.61) and 100-backstroke (58.94) respectively. Deidra Thomas (200-free), Agustina Foglietta (500-free) and Mandy Harms (100-free) also recorded best times as the Cougars jumped out to its best start in years.

The UH swimmers and divers will next be in action in Fayetteville, Arkansas, for a pair of meets on November 5-6. Houston faces meet host Arkansas on Friday and NCAA Division II power Drury College in Fayetteville on Saturday.
