Houston Tennis Competes at HEB Invitational
Jan. 21, 2013
WACO, Texas - After opening the spring season with a rout of nationally-ranked Stephen F. Austin, the University of Houston women's tennis team took a break from dual play with the HEB Invitational over the weekend against a talented field at the Baylor Tennis Center. "We had mostly mixed results for us this weekend but that's to be expected for a team that is new to this level of competition," head coach Patrick Sullivan said. "We have plenty of talent and showed that at certain spots, but we were also taught a few lessons on courage and toughness in the big moments by teams that have been there much more often than we have. The good news is that the competition doesn't get much tougher than this, and though we have a lot of work yet to do, we are encouraged by how far the team has come since August." The event, which consisted of six singles draws and three doubles draws, gave the Cougars the opportunity to compete against their counterparts from the other schools in the region. Sophomore Charlotte Phillips and Houston newcomer Rocio Martin Fernandez opened the action on Friday with an 8-6 victory over No. 15 Baylor's tandem of Generette and Leatu. The duo followed up the next day with another 8-6 triumph over No. 59 Stephen F. Austin's Gordo and Terentyeva. The junior duo of Celia Fraser and Dionne Sanders teamed up to outlast SFA's Bugayenko and Lorco, 8-7(3), while the Houston tandem of sophomore Elena Kordolaimi and junior Jo Garvey added an 8-3 victory over the Ladyjacks' De Haan and Servise.
Phillips highlighted the singles portion of the tournament for the Cougars, posting wins over UT-Arlington's Christine Foote (6-2, 6-3) and SFA's Margot de Haan (7-6, ret.), while Fraser pulled out a 5-7, 6-1, 10-8 decision over Baylor's Alex Leatu. The Cougars will resume dual play on Friday by hosting a doubleheader against McNeese State and Tyler Junior College. Houston will take on the Cowgirls at 1 p.m., at John E. Hoff Courts before traveling across town to the Galleria Tennis and Athletic Club (GTAC) to face Tyler JC. DOUBLES RESULTS Burgic/Kisialeva (BU) def. Kordolaimi/Sanders (UH), 8-2
