Houston Takes Down Nevada 4-3

TUCSON – The Houston Cougar Women’s Tennis team came away with a win in their first road match of the season against Nevada on Saturday. The Cougars won 4-3 in what turned out to be the most intense match so far this spring season.

Starting with doubles, Lauren Alter and Alison Mills gave Houston their first win of the day with a dominating 6-1 performance. They move to 4-1 this spring season when playing with each other.

Next, Tsveta Dimitrova and Sveva Mazzari dropped a 6-3 decision, giving them their first loss on the season.

With the doubles score being tied at 1, Ana Glumac and Constandena Nicolaou pulled out a gutsy 7-5 win to give the Cougars the doubles point.

Mazzari started off singles with a bang in a 6-0, 6-1 win over Adriana Gergelyova to push the score to 2-0 for Houston. Mazzari remains undefeated on the season in singles, boasting a 6-0 record.

Mills lost at the No. 4 singles position with a score of 6-2, 6-2, to bring the overall score to 2-1.

Dimitrova was defeated at the No. 1 singles position 6-3, 6-3, putting her singles record at 5-1 on the spring season.

The Cougars bounced back with Alter’s 7-5, 6-1 victory to reclaim the lead 3-2. Alter has yet to lose in singles on the season, boasting a 6-0 record.

Glumac fell 7-5, 6-2 at the No. 6 position, which evened the match at 3-3, bringing the overall match down to the wire with just Nicolaou’s match remaining.


 

 

All eyes were on Nicolaou as she came up huge for the Cougars with a 6-4, 6-3 victory, giving the Cougars the overall match win 4-3.

UP NEXT FOR HOUSTON
The Cougars return to action on Saturday, Feb. 10 against Arizona in Tucson. First serve is set for noon (CST).
