Houston Outlasts Arizona To End Road Trip

TUCSON – The Cougars rolled to an impressive 6-1 win over Arizona on Sunday to finish their road trip. Houston swept doubles and only dropped one match in singles. This weekend also included a 4-3 win over Nevada on Saturday.

Leading off with doubles, Lauren Alter and Alison Mills cruised to a 6-3 win over Mary Lewis and Talya Zandberg.

Next, Constandena Nicolaou and Ana Glumac defeated Gitte Heynemans and Marie Van Aelst with an identical score of 6-3. The win gave the Cougars the doubles point.

Tsveta Dimitrova and Sveva Mazzari’s match was ended early due to Houston grabbing the doubles point.

Dimitrova led off singles with a 6-3, 6-2 win. Although she lost her singles match the day before against Nevada, she stormed back to take control of the match and give the Cougars a 2-0 match lead.

Mazzari finished quickly after, winning 6-3, 6-4. She improves to 7-0 this spring season in singles.

Alter took down Zandberg with a score of 6-3, 6-3. Along with Mazzari, Lauren is also undefeated in singles this spring season. With the win, the Cougars clinched the match at 4-0.

The only loss of the day came from Alison Mills’ match, where she was defeated in a close match 0-6, 6-4, 2-6.

Glumac battled back for the win in a lengthy match finished with a score of 3-6, 6-2, 6-2.

To finish the day, Nicolaou won a close match 7-5, 7-5. She also won the deciding match against Nevada on Saturday.


 

 

UP NEXT FOR HOUSTON
The Cougars return home on Friday, Feb. 16 to battle New Mexico State. First serve is set for 2 p.m. at the Barbara Wallace Winston Tennis Facility. The following day, Feb. 17, the Cougars take on Rice at the George R. Brown Tennis Center at 11 a.m.
