HOUSTON - The University of Houston tennis team cruised to a 6-1 victory against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Thursday afternoon under sunny conditions at Hoff Courts on the UH campus.

The Cougars (8-3) have won 24 of their last 26 matches at Hoff Courts and have defeated the Islanders 6-1 in each of the last four seasons.

"This was a solid victory for us and one that we needed to have after losing earlier in the week to LSU," head coach John Severance said. "Our team responded and played well across the board."

Houston secured the doubles point after a slow start as Loli Gomez and Leila Salek recorded an 8-3 win at the No. 1 position. Vicky Simpson and Lindsay Willeford clinched the doubles point for the Cougars, tallying an 8-3 victory in the No. 3 position. Down 3-2, Anna Djananova and Sonja Nikolic secured the doubles sweep in style, winning six of the last seven games in an 8-4 rout.

Gomez put Houston ahead 2-0 with a strong 6-3, 6-1 win at the top of the lineup. The Cougars made it 3-0 as Simpson won her last eight games, notching a convincing 6-3, 6-0 victory in the No. 5 hole.

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's (2-5) lone win of the afternoon came at the No. 3 spot as Nina Ciric knocked off Sonja Nikolic 6-1, 6-2.

The Cougars rebounded and clinched the match when Leila Salek corralled a 6-1, 6-2 win at the No. 2 slot. Djananova and Neila Starratt also racked up straight set victories, dropping only one game between them in the second set.

"I was pleased that our freshmen stepped on the accelerator in the second set after winning tight opening sets," Severance said. "That's what you need to do in that situation. They did a fabulous job of riding the momentum and not letting up."

Houston leaves the Lone Star State for the first time this season with a pair of Conference USA tilts at Memphis and against Southern Miss. First serve against the Tigers on Friday, March 2 is slated for 2:30pm.

"This is a key stretch of conference matches coming up," Severance said. "Our team will enjoy a weekend off before getting back to practice on Monday to prepare for Memphis and Southern Miss."
