HOUSTON - The University of Houston women's tennis team bounced back from a tough loss on Friday with a 5-2 victory over UMKC on Sunday afternoon at John E. Hoff Courts. With the win, the Cougars improved to 9-4 this season and 5-1 at home.

"I was proud to see us come out with good effort and attitude after Friday's disappointing loss," head coach Patrick Sullivan said. "UMKC fought hard and I was really impressed with them, but we stepped up when we needed to. As you might expect from an inexperienced team playing for a new coach, we have been inconsistent this season, but are definitely moving in the right direction."

The Cougars set the tone early in doubles play, as Jo Garvey and Elena Kordolaimi blanked UMKC's Pintos and Stavrianakou, 8-0, and Houston's Maja Kazimieruk and Celia Fraser weren't far behind with an 8-1 drubbing of Amsallem and Lisenby at the No. 3 spot to clinch the opening point.

Kazimieruk opened singles action in the same fashion, posting a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Suzan Lisenby to improve to 11-2 this season and 3-0 at the No. 4 position.

Fraser followed with a 6-3, 6-1 defeat of Eva Dalvai at the No. 2 position to put Houston up by a score of 3-0, and Martin Fernandez sealed the win for the Cougars by topping Dimitra Stavrianakou, 7-6, 6-2, at the No. 3 spot to improve to 9-3 this spring.

Kordolaimi rounded out the scoring for the Cougars with a hard fought 6-2, 6-7(2), 6-4 triumph over Laura Bouet at the top spot for her eighth victory in dual play.

The Cougars will receive a nine-day break before taking to the road again to face Manhattan (March 12) and Rutgers (March 13).
