Final Stats

DENTON – The Houston Cougar Women’s Tennis team took down North Texas by a score of 4-2 on Saturday, in Denton, Texas. Houston picked up a win in both of its road matches this weekend.

Starting with doubles, Lauren Alter and Alison Mills lost in a close match 6-4 to Maria Kononova and Minying Liang. This was only their second loss this season.

Ana Glumac and Constandena Nicolaou got the Cougars back on track with a 6-4 win over Nidhi Surapaneni and Haruka Sasaki to tie the doubles score. They won both of their doubles matches during the weekend road trip.

In the deciding doubles match, Tsveta Dimitrova and Sveva Mazzari lost in a very competitive effort to Tamuna Kutubidze and Alexandra Heczey, 7-6. This loss gave North Texas the doubles point.

The Cougars bounced back in singles after giving up the doubles point. Alter started off singles play with a dominant 6-1, 6-3 win over Liang. She picked up her eleventh win of the season with only one loss.

Dimitrova followed suit with a 6-4, 6-0 victory over No. 66 Kononova. This put the Cougars up 2-1 in the overall match.

The only singles loss of the day came when Mills fell to Surapaneni 6-7, 3-6. The Mean Green tied the overall match 2-2 with this loss.

Nicolaou pulled out a gutsy 6-4, 6-4 win over Sasaki to put the Cougars in front again 3-2. This was a fitting way for her to grab her tenth singles win on the season.

Glumac sealed the deal for the Cougars with a lengthy 5-7, 7-5, 6-2 win against Heczey. Houston won the overall match 4-2 and improved to 12-1 on the spring season.

The only match that didn’t go final was Mazzari’s singles match. She was down 4-6, 6-2, 3-4 to Kutubidze at that time.
