Tennis Falls to No. 55 SMU

Final Stats

HOUSTON - The University of Houston tennis team lost a 7-0 decision to No. 55 SMU Sunday afternoon in a Conference USA contest at Hoff Courts. Four of Houston's five losses have come to opponents ranked in the FILA Collegiate Top 75.

"We went in with a better gameplan and mindset than we did last Sunday against Southern Miss," head coach John Severance said. "Our team flat out didn't execute. SMU is quality team. This is a tiny step forwards not a step backwards."

SMU claimed the doubles point with a pair of 8-3 victories at the No.1 and No. 3 positions. Loli Gomez and Leila Salek emerged with Houston's (9-5) lone win of the afternoon, claiming a hard-fought 8-6 win in the No. 2 spot

The Mustangs (9-4) notched five straight set wins in singles action. Neila Starratt forced a three-set tiebreaker in her match in the No. 6 hole, but fell 10-7.

The Cougars return to the courts and take on Central Arkansas Monday at 11am. If there is rain at Hoff Courts on the UH Campus, the match will be moved to the Jewish Community Center on Braeswood.
