FULLTERTON, Calif. - The University of Houston tennis team defeated Cal State-Fullerton 5-2 Wednesday to improve its overall record to 7-4 this spring.

The Cougars began the match on a sour note by losing the doubles point to fall behind. Houston's No. 1 and No. 3 doubles teams dropped their contests to lose the match's opening point, despite clinching the win in the No. 2 spot when juniors Laura Ring and Elena Kazakova won 8-2.

Houston fell down 2-0 in the match, when Kazakova lost to Monica Rodriguez, 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 2 spot. The Cougars, however, pulled even in the match when freshman Maja Kazimieruk defeated Jerusha Cruz 6-3, 6-0 at the No. 5 spot, and senior Neila Starratt beat Karina Akhmedova 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 6 spot.

Houston then took control of the match, when Ring beat Malorie Dela Cruz 6-2, 6-3 at the No. 4 spot, and junior Joanna Kacprzyk defeated Erin Wiesener 7-6, 6-1 in the No. 3 match.

The win was capped off when freshman Bryony Hunter won in the top singles match against Tiffany Mai, 7-5, 3-6, 10-5.

Houston is now 2-1 on its California road trip and will conclude the western swing on Thursday when it faces Colorado State in Fullerton, Calif.
