LAS VEGAS - The University of Houston tennis team snapped its streak of heartbreaking losses with a 5-2 victory over Bowling Green on Sunday evening in Las Vegas. The Cougars improved to 7-6 overall this spring while the Falcons dropped to 4-4 on the season.

"We've been playing with some injuries and have had some close losses lately so it's great to get back in the win column," head coach John Severance said. "Continuing to play our style and getting healthy is the key for us right now."

Bowling Green kicked off the match winning two of three doubles matches for the early 1-0 advantage, but the Cougars bounced back with dominant play in singles action, taking five of six matches, including four in straight sets.

Sophomore Jo Garvey was thrown into action after an injury in doubles play, and stepped up with a 6-3, 6-0 rout of Jessica Easdale at the No. 6 position to even the match at 1-1.

Liselot Koenen followed with a 7-5, 6-2 defeat of Katie Grubb at the No. 5 spot before the Falcons evened the match with a tight victory at the No. 4 position.

Giorgia Pozzan then claimed her 10th victory of the spring with a 6-3, 6-2 disposal of Maddy Eccleston at the top spot and Celia Fraser continued her strong play with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Emily Reuland to clinch the match for the Cougars.

Bryony Hunter rounded out the scoring for Houston, outlasting Nikki Chiricosta at the No. 2 position by a score of 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.

The Cougars return home to play host to Prairie View A&M at 3 p.m., Thursday at John E. Hoff Courts.
