March 25, 2007

Final Stats

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. - Head coach John Severance picked up his 50th career victory as the University of Houston tennis team recorded a 5-2 win over College of Charleston Saturday afternoon at the Patriots Pilot Tennis Center near the C of C campus.

The Cougars (13-5) dropped the doubles point for the fourth time in the last five matches but won five of the six singles matches to secure the win.

Leila Salek and Anna Djananova came away with an 8-4 win at the No. 2 spot, but College of Charleston (11-5) responded with a pair of 8-4 victories at the No. 1 and No. 3 holes.

"It's confusing on how our doubles play is up and down," Severance said. "We need to regroup in this area at practice this week."

Vicky Simpson evened the score at 1-1, notching a 6-4, 6-3 win in the No. 5 spot. College of Charleston regained a 2-1 advantage as Laura Borza earned a 6-3, 6-2 victory at the No. 4 slot.

Sonja Nikolic fired back with a convincing 6-4, 6-1 in the No. 3 position to knot the score at 2-2.

Leila Salek continued her strong play at the top of the lineup to give Houston a 3-2 lead, scrapping to a hard-fought 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 win.

Anna Djananova clinched the victory for the Cougars, tallying a 7-6 (3), 6-4 win in the No. 6 hole, while Loli Gomez put the finishing touches on the victory, pulling out a 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 win at the No. 2 slot.

"Our team got better this weekend because we had to fight for both of these victories," Severance said. "Leila (Salek) and Loli (Gomez) are really stepping up for us right now. Vicky also is playing a solid brand of high-percentage tennis."

Houston squares off Saturday at noon with Texas Pan-America. Admission is free to Hoff Courts on the UH campus.
