Cougar Netters Close Regular Season With 4-3 Win Over Rice

HOUSTON - The University of Houston women's tennis team closed out its regular season Wednesday with a 4-3 victory over cross-town rival Rice at the John E. Hoff Varsity Courts. With the win the Cougars improved their overall record to 11-8. Houston's No. 1 and 2 doubles tandems were victorious to give the Cougars the 1-0 advantage. Senior Analia Longoni made her final home appearance and picked up a singles win at the No. 2 spot to lead the Cougars. Freshmen Yolandi Terblanche and Sandra Blajer won at the No. 3 and No. 6 spots, respectively, to give Houston the win. Freshman Miranda Foley, who lost a hard fought match to Rice's Blair Disesa 7-5, 7-6 at the No. 1 singles spot, was named the C-USA Women's Tennis Player of the Week for the period ending April 8. The freshman went 2-0 last week at No. 1 singles to improve to 16-11 on the season and helped Houston to wins over Sam Houston State and then-No. 74 Texas Tech. She opened the week with a 6-2, 6-1 win over SHSU's Tara Shelander and then concluded the week with a 6-2, 1-6, 7-5 victory over the Red Raiders' Irina Tereschenko, who was ranked 109th nationally. She also teamed with Terblanche to post an 8-4 win over the SHSU tandem of Shelander and Mounia Hassib. This is the second time Foley has been honored with the weekly award (Jan. 18).
