Tennis Upends UTEP, 6-1

HOUSTON - The University of Houston tennis team came away with a 6-1 victory over the UTEP Minors on a beautiful Friday afternoon at the John E. Hoff Tennis Courts. The match improves Houston's record to 13-8 on the season with only two matches remaining. Houston dominated UTEP (5-13) from the start by sweeping the doubles pairings. The Cougar pair of Biljana Dimovska and Yolandi Terblanche improved their record to 9-3 by beating UTEP's duo of Kendall Exelby and Katherine Palider, 8-2. In singles play Houston won four of the five matches. In the number one slot, Dimovska defeated Exelby, 6-3, 6-0. Senior Diana Martin was victorious in a close matchup at the number two slot against Tea Spirta in three sets, 6-4, 5-7, 10-5. UH also picked up victories at the three and four slots, as freshman Brianna Bateup defeated Katherine Palider, 7-5, 6-2, and junior Kami Miller defeated Teri Wilkerson, 6-2, 3-0. UTEP's lone victory on the day came at the five slot as Danielle King took down Cougar junior Yolandi Terblanche, 6-2, 6-3, 10-8. Houston closes out the season on Sunday, April 17, with matches against Sam Houston State and Lamar. The Cougars and Bearkats face off at 11 a.m. on Sunday, followed by a match against the Cardinals at 2:30 p.m. Both matches will be held at the John E.
