HOUSTON - The University of Houston tennis team wrapped up its season on Friday, falling to tournament-host Rice by the score of 4-0 during the quarterfinal round of the 2009 Conference USA Women's Tennis Championship. "I feel bad for our seniors," said head coach John Severance. "We played well in spots today and I am very pleased with Joanna's performance as well as Vicky's tenacity. I'm very disappointed in the loss. Neither myself, Jo (Keene) or our players planned on our season ending today." The day began with the Owl capturing the doubles point by sweeping all three doubles matches. At the No. 1 spot, Lucy Forward & Vicky Simpson trailed Rice's Julie Chao & Ana Guzman 5-4, but the match was not finished after the Owls captured the doubles points by defeating the UH tandems of Laura Ring & Jordan McCombs and Lynley Wasson & Joanna Kacprzyk. During the singles competition, Forward fell to Chao at the top singles match, by the count of 6-1, 6-1, while Wasson was downed by Rebekka Henle in straight sets 6-0, 6-0. Rice was able to claim the match when they collected their fourth point of the day with Alex Rasch's win over Alix Young at the No. 6 singles position, 6-2, 6-1. Houston was leading in two matches when the contest was ended, as Kacprzyk was leading Jessica Jackson 6-2, 3-1 at the No. 4 singles spot. In the No. 5 singles match, Simpson was also ahead 7-5, 1-1 when play was called. The No. 3 singles match was also not completed as Ring had dropped the first set.
