Koenen Claims Two Titles at Auburn Invitational
AUBURN, Ala. - Liselot Koenen claimed two flight titles on Saturday at the Auburn Invitational to highlight the opening tournament of the season for the University of Houston tennis team.
Koenen, who won two matches in straight sets on Friday, met Georgia Southern's Stephanie Woods in the flight title and rolled to a 6-2, 6-0 victory to claim her first collegiate fall title.
"We had some solid singles performances this weekend with Liselot's first collegiate fall title as the highlight," head coach Patrick Sullivan said. "We're off to a good start, and I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of the team in action next week in Corpus Christi."
In doubles play, Celia Fraser and Dionne Sanders claimed a win on Friday before Sanders dropped out with an injury, and Koenen joined forces with Fraser to win two matches on Saturday for the flight title.
The Cougar duo opened Saturday with an 8-5 victory over Tulane's Katz and Helisten and followed with another 8-5 win over Georgia Southern's Maffet and Klein in the title match. The doubles championship was the first for both Fraser and Koenen in their careers at Houston.
"Doubles is something we are really trying to emphasize as a program," Sullivan said. "We tell the team that the goal is that they have all bought in so well to the team philosophy that we can switch partners seamlessly if needed, so it's especially rewarding as a coach that when one player went down with an injury, another was able to step in and play well enough with a new partner to win the flight."
The Cougars continue tournament action next weekend at the Islander Open in Corpus Christi, Texas.
