Sept. 16, 2012

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Maja Kazimieruk claimed two singles wins on Saturday to lead the University of Houston tennis team at the Islanders Open.

The senior from Poznan, Poland, opened play by outlasting UTPA's Wanda Beguelin by a score of 5-7, 6-4, 10-5 before rolling past Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Leanne Mascall, 6-2, 6-4. Kazimieruk, who is 3-0 to begin the fall season, will face Stefanie Nicolae of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in the semifinals at 9 a.m., on Sunday.

"As a group we made progress from where we started yesterday," assistant coach Jo Keene said. "The focus was good, and the willingness to make adjustments was positive. We'll continue to work on putting it all together and I'm excited about the potential this group has if they stay tough and keep working hard. We're all looking forward to supporting Maja through her semifinal tomorrow."

Charlotte Phillips also added a win on Saturday with a 6-2, 6-2 defeat of Sam Houston State's Sheridan Currie before falling in straight sets (7-5, 6-2) in the quarterfinals to Maider Martin of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
