Tennis Finishes First Fall Tournament

HOUSTON - After earning what could easily have been the hardest draw of the tournament, the University of Houston tennis team finishes close matches against ranked opponents and takes a victory in the doubles winner's bracket of the Kolache Doubles draw this weekend.
Leila Salek and Jordan McCombs faced the Texas duo of Stephanie Davison and Caroline Larsson. The teams battled back and forth for points over several games with the Houston tandem holding on until the very end when Texas defeated them in a final 8-6.
Lynley Wasson and Vicky Simpson won their first doubles match together taking over Arkansas State's Chelminska and Kamal 9-7 on the first day. The Cougar duo went on to take the winners bracket in the Kolache Doubles draw after defeating the team of Aranda and Jagtiani from Lamar in a blowout 8-3 and an 8-6 win over Lin and Shiva Shankar from conference rival Rice in the final round.
In singles play Salek took on UTA's No. 109 Klara Jagosova in a three-set match 6-7 (4). 6-1, 6-0 before heading to the consolation bracket while Lucy Forward fell to the No. 19 player in the nation Vanja Corovic (6-2, 6-2).
McCombs won the consolation bracket in the main draw for the Chipotle Singles after falling to Rone Van Wyk, 6-2. 4-6, 6-3 from Arkansas State. McCombs went on to move past Melanie Brown from Prairie View A&M, Salina Aranda from Lamar to the final round where she faced Arkansas States Paula Chelminska. The two players battled it out before Chelminska was forced to retire and McCombs took the match 2-6, 6-4, ret.
The women's tennis team will be back in action next weekend Sept. 28-30 in Waco, Texas as it attends the Baylor Invite
