Houston Tennis Opens Play at Two Tournaments

HOUSTON - The University of Houston women's tennis team competed in split squads on Friday at the Rice Invitational in Houston and the Razorback Classic in Fayetteville, Ark. Sophomores Elena Kordolaimi and Liselot Koenen made the trip to Arkansas, as Kordolaimi highlighted play with a gritty 4-6, 7-6(5), 6-4 victory over Tulsa's Isaura Enrique. Koenen dropped a 7-5, 7-5 decision to Arkansas' Ana Lorena Hernandez in the opening round, while the two teamed up in doubles play, falling to the Razorback duo of Suria and Pang by a score of 8-5. Celia Fraser secured the lone victory for the Cougars at the Rice Invite, defeating Elizabeth Thoms of UT-Arlington by a score of 7-6, 6-3. The junior from Birmingham, U.K., will face Rice's Kim Anicete in the semifinals on Saturday. Maja Kazimieruk, Dionne Sanders and Gabriella Jansson all dropped matches in the first round and will play out of the consolation bracket on Saturday.
