WACO, Texas – The Houston Cougar Women’s Tennis team tallied a pair of singles and doubles wins each on the first day of the HEB Invitational on Friday, in Waco.
Houston began doubles play with a pair of wins at the HEB Invitational. The Cougars’ team of Tsveta Dimitrova and Sveva Mazzari defeated Ito/Shiskina (UT Tyler) 8-5, while Ana Glumac and Lauren Alter topped Adaloglou/Lizariturry (Mississippi State) 8-6 to advance to the second round.
In the second round, Dimitrova and Mazzari were locked in a neck-and-neck battle with the No. 1 seed Foster/Lavender (LSU) before eventually falling 8-7, and Glumac and Alter fought tough but eventually dropped an 8-6 decision to Arnold/Soli (UT Tyler).
The Cougars picked up two more wins in singles play, beginning with Dimitrova who entered ranked as the No. 2 seed in the tournament. Dimitrova dropped the first set 6-3 to Sara Lizariturry before answering with a 6-4 win in the second set to even the score. Dimitrova was able to keep the momentum in her favor in the final set, pulling out a 6-3 victory to seal the match. Dimitrova advances to the Round of 16 where she will meet Jessica Golovin (LSU) at noon on Saturday.
Mazzari also dropped her first set in the round of 32, falling 6-4 to Angela Lorenzo. The second set went down to the wire and entered a tie-breaker, however Mazzari evened the match with a 7-6 (7) set win. Mazzari would leave no doubt in the decisive set, dropping just one game en route to a 6-1 victory to advance in the tournament. With the victory, Mazzari moves on to Saturday’s Round of 16 to face Yuna Ito (UT Tyler) at noon.
A trio of Cougars opened singles play in the Round of 64, including Glumac who was matched against Kalani Soli (UT Tyler). The two battled to a 6-6 tie in the first set, before Soli won the tiebreaker 7-6 (0). Soli was able to claim the second set 6-3 to close the match.
Also in singles play, Laura Bernardos took each set down to the wire, falling 7-5, 7-5 to Sonia Chen (Louisiana Tech), while Alter dropped a 6-4, 6-3 decision to Oceane Garibal (UT Tyler).
Glumac, Alter and Bernardos will begin singles action at 10:30 a.m., on Saturday, with Glumac facing Caroline Kelly, Alter meeting Alexis Pereira and Bernardos squaring off against Stevie Kennedy.

Houston heads to Fort Worth, Texas, for the penultimate competition of the fall season. The Cougars will compete in the ITA Texas Regionals, to be held Oct. 13-17 at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center & Bartzen Varsity Courts on the campus of TCU.

For a minimum gift of $1,000, supporters receive a team poster and a signed tennis ball, private practice invitation, a stadium blanket, fleece jacket and a lesson from the coach.
For a minimum gift of $2,500, supporters receive a team poster and a signed tennis ball, private practice invitation, a stadium blanket, fleece jacket, a lesson from the coach and a group lesson from the coaching staff.
