WACO, Texas – Sophomore Tsveta Dimitrova advanced to the semifinals of the HEB Invitational after a pair of wins on the second day of competition on Saturday in Waco, Texas.
Dimitrova opened the morning against Jessica Golovin (LSU) in the Round of 16. The sophomore opened strong with a 6-4 win in the first set before closing out the match with a 6-2 victory in set two to advance to the Quarterfinal Round.
In the quarters, Dimitrova grabbed an early lead over Angie Shakhraichuk (Baylor) with a 6-4 mark in the first set. However, Shakhraichuk was able to even the score with a 6-3 set-two win to force a decisive third set. The final set played just as close as the rest of the match, and it was Dimitrova prevailing with a 6-4 win to advance in the tournament.
Dimitrova will meet Livia Kraus (Baylor) in the semifinal round at 9 a.m., Sunday.
Senior Sveva Mazzari also picked up a win on Saturday to earn a spot in the quarterfinal round. In the Round of 16, Mazzari took her first set against Yuna Ito (TJCC) 6-2. Mazzari would carry the momentum in the second set, taking a 6-3 victory to seal the match.
Mazzari would advance to meet Jessica Hinojosa-Gomez (Baylor) in the quarterfinal round where she fell 6-1, 6-0.
In the consolation bracket, the Cougars picked up a pair of wins from senior Ana Glumac and sophomore Lauren Alter. In her first match of the day, Glumac picked up a straight-set victory over Caroline Kelly (Mississippi State) with a 6-2, 6-0 win.
The senior advanced to meet Mekeila Erspamer (TJCC) in the Consolation Quarterfinal Round. Glumac claimed the first set 6-4 before rolling to a 6-2 win in the second set to close the match. Glumac advances to the Consolation Semifinals, where she will meet Sara Lizariturry (Mississippi State) at 9 a.m., Sunday.
Alter found herself in a battle in her third round matchup against Alexis Pereira (TCU) in a match that saw each set go to a tiebreaker. Alter claimed the first set 7-6 (5) before edging Pereira in the second set 7-6 (4) to win the match.
Alter had claimed the first set 6-2 in her Consolation Quarterfinal Round before her opponent Elyse Lavender (LSU) was forced to retire from the match. Alter advances to meet Magda Adaloglou (Mississippi State) at 9 a.m., Sunday.
Freshman Laura Bernardos was also in action for the Cougars on Saturday, meeting Stevie Kennedy (TCU) in the Consolation Third round, where she would fall in straight sets 6-0, 6-0.

Houston heads to Fort Worth, Texas, for the penultimate competition of the fall season. The Cougars will compete in the ITA Texas Regionals, to be held Oct. 13-17 at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center & Bartzen Varsity Courts on the campus of TCU.

For a minimum gift of $2,500, supporters receive a team poster and a signed tennis ball, private practice invitation, a stadium blanket, fleece jacket, a lesson from the coach and a group lesson from the coaching staff.
