    HOUSTON--The University of Houston tennis team finished day one of the 28th-Annual Rice Invitational winning three of four doubles matches.

    Sophomore Lucy Forward and Lynley Wasson teamed to beat Monika Drabkova and Caroline Dedering from UTSA in the Flight 2 match, 8-3. Freshman Alix Young and senior Vicky Simpson defeated Samford's Andrie Meiring and Stephanie Parkison, 8-7 in the Flight 3 to move on to a 9 a.m. match Saturday against Holly Phillips and Nathalie Wallin from UTSA.

    Forward and Wasson will also be on the court at 9 a.m. against Daiana Negreano and Nicola Matovicova from Texas-Arlington.

    Sophomore Joanna Kacprzyk and junior Neila Starratt paired to beat Shannon Mackenzie of North Texas and Lauren Springer of UTSA, 8-2 in the Flight 4 match. The pair will take on Constanzo Gonzales and Manami Kuroda from Lamar at 9 a.m. Saturday.

    In the doubles top-Flight, the team of sophomore Laura Ring and senior Jordan McCombs lost to North Texas' Maduca Ranganathan and Irina Paraschiv, 8-2. The two will play Julie Chao and Analy Guzman at 9 a.m. Saturday.

    For the singles matches, Kacpryzk took the Flight 4 win from Holly Phillips of UTSA, 7-6, 6-4. She will play Sophie Quist from SMU at 1 p.m. Saturday.

    Vicky Simpson won Flight 5, 6-4, 6-4 against Saskia Krusel from Texas State. Simpson will also play at 1 p.m. against Rebecca Kirven from Samford.

    Ring will play at 3 p.m. Saturday against Mackenzie after her three-set match victory (6-4, 4-6, 6-2) against Eva Silvester from UTSA.

    McCombs also went three-matches deep to defeat Rachel Cox from SMU, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2. She will play Jennifer Nowland from Texas State at 3 p.m. Saturday.
