HOUSTON - The University of Houston women's tennis team completed its first action of the fall season on Sunday by wrapping up play at the 2008 Holiday Inn Astrodome Rice Classic.

Sophomore Lucy Forward won her match-up Sunday in the flight one singles bracket, downing Klara Jagosova, 6-1, 5-7, 1-0 (5). In the No. 2 singles bracket, senior Lynley Wasson was also a winner, rallying past Texas State's Nyssa Peele, 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (5). Both Forward and Wasson finished 1-2 on the weekend at the event as they prepare for the Cougars 2009 campaign, which will begin in the spring.

Appearing in her first event as a Cougar, freshman Alix Young finished her play at the event with a 7-5, 7-5 setback to Ashley Ellis of Texas State.

The No. 4 singles flight saw Joanna Kacprzyk narrowly miss winning the bracket, falling to Rice's Rebecca Lin 7-5, 6-3 after winning matches on Friday and Saturday to advance to the flight's championship match.

UH senior Vicky Simpson, defeated Saskia Kruse (Texas State) on Friday afternoon, but could not continue her momentum in the No. 5 singles flight, falling on Saturday to Samford's Rebecca Kirven before dropping a 6-4, 6-1 decision to Rice's Rebekka Hanle on Sunday.

Junior Neila Starratt dropped her match in the No. 6 singles flight, while sophomore Laura Ring defeated Sara Pesic (UTA) 6-3, 6-3 in the No. 7 single flight and senior Jordan McCombs fell 6-3, 7-6 (3) in the championship match of the No. 8 singles flight.

In doubles action, the duos of Ring/McCombs in the No. 1 doubles bracket and Young/Simpson in the No. 3 doubles bracket emerged as winners on Sunday, while the Forward/Wasson combo fell in the No. 2 Doubles slot.

UH's duo of Kacprzyk/Starratt, fell in the championship match of the No. 4 doubles flight after posting victories on Friday and Saturday at the event.
