Tennis Completes Opening Day at USTA/ITA Regional

WACO, Texas - The University of Houston women's tennis team returned to fall tournament action on Friday for the opening day of the USTA/ITA Regional Championship at the Hurd Tennis Center. Sophomore Elena Kordolaimi highlighted singles play for the Cougars, defeating UT-Arlington's Giada D'ortona by a score of 6-4, 6-4 to advance to Saturday's round of 32 after a first-round bye. The Lamia, Greece, native improved to 5-1 during fall play in her first season with the Cougars. Junior Dionne Sanders also recorded a win for Houston, outlasting UTEP's Dariya Abdrakhmanova, 0-6, 7-6(5), 7-6(3) before falling in the round of 64 to ninth-seeded Alexandra Malyarchikova of SMU, 6-2, 6-1. Kordolaimi and Sanders joined forces in doubles play, posting an 8-6 victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Figueroa and Shaw to advance to Saturday's round of 32, where the Cougar duo will face the top-seeded tandem of Adams and Kilgo from Texas Tech.
